What Kind of Wrap to Wear Over Formal Dress
My debut into the world of bridal jackets happened last winter, when a friend excitedly phoned to tell me she would be getting married the following fall season.
"I need your help in the fashion and style department." she said.
"I'm your girl!" I answered. "What can I do?"
"I have no clue what to do about wearing something to stay warm. We'll be outside going to and from the car to the church, to the reception, and definitely for our photos."
Having had a summer wedding myself, it wasn't something I had even considered purchasing. Even if the evening turned cool, we would be inside the reception venue staying warm by dancing up a storm.
Do you need a Bridal Jacket?
Fall and winter weddings have that extra element of a chilly day, in which you often can't brave the outdoors with bare shoulders without freezing your tail off. A bridal jacket can not only be the perfect thing to cover up and stay warm, it can also be a very luxurious compliment to your overall look.
The wedding day scene is set: Leaves change color and blend into a beautiful palette of brilliant oranges, reds, and greens. You're ready to go outside for some incredible photos.
What we love about a bridal jacket is that you could potentially use it many times in your regular rotation of jackets. If you choose a coverup that's a classic style and cut (think cropped blazer) you might be able to stretch your dollar by wearing later it to work or formal events.
How can you really go wrong with a piece that can stick around in your wardrobe long after your big day? Not to mention you'll feel all warm and fuzzy every time you slip it on.
Choose the perfect bridal jacket for your gown
You must consider the style of your dress — is it classic? Boho? Timeless or old-fashioned?
- A more elaborate dress – wearing a dress with a lot of detail like beads, sequins, pearls, or lace? You will want to keep it fairly simple on top. A basic bolero, shawl, or cap-sleeved jacket will work well to complete your fall look.
- Simpler dress – particularly on top (a basic strapless or sweetheart neckline) you can get a little more adventurous with your coverup. An elegant fur stole, lace or eyelet details, and even a little bling would be a great addition to a simple gown.
- Bride on a budget – there are ways to save when it comes to jackets. Faux fur can be every bit as luxurious and beautiful in photos.
